Lighting trends for 2023 The key designs that will be in trend for the next year BY ARUSHI SAKHUJA Designs shared,“As for the design of the lights from sleek to decorative, there are many brilliant styles available. Nature-inspired designs featuring leaves, floral patterns, feathers, antlers, snowflakes, and also geometric industrial designs which are common. “ With a sparkling selection of new lighting being unveiled at the recent SuperSalone in Milan, London Design Festival and Decorex Internationa, lighting trends are evolving. “Among key trends today are sustainability and environment-friendly solutions, as well as the incorporation of smart technologies,” quoted Jiri. Below we’ve taken a look at the top lighting trends for 2023. Architectural chandeliers “ Lighting for modern homes is all about invoking drama and making a statement. So bold, bespoke and scaledup chandeliers and pendant lights are in vogue,” share Sachin andNeha Gupta Founders and Interior Designer Duo at Beyond Designs. Chandeliers have been a lighting staple when it comes to grand home interiors. Some may associate the word with the image of shiny glass pendant drops hanging from a decorative iron or curved brass handle. Others may imagine a boudoir bedroom with high ceilings. But no matter what, chandeliers are here to stay! With modern iterations, the trend includes large-scale crystal chandeliers or uniquely designed modern lights. The use of such big and prominent elements can add a bold and opulent statement to your space. For Jiri, it is not just about a chandelier being beautiful, but also practical and providing an ambience that is unique. Lighting is an important design element for a home, and it can impact mood and the cosiness of a room. A statement light can often pull together an entire design or make it look like a disastrous misfit. Let’s just say that lighting trends are the trump card of the world of interior design. From flashy ceiling lights to wall brackets and chandeliers, to floor lamps and earthy options; lighting trends have transformed phenomenally in the last decade. The traditional use of a single bulb to light up a room has evolved to incorporate layered lighting in today’s homes. While some pivot away from spending those extra hours scouting for the perfect lighting option, others realise that lighting is an essential component to a successful design scheme. Floor lamps, wall lights, table and desk luminaires - these are just a few of the options available when mapping out a grand new lighting design scheme. The evolution of the chandelier While some designs are a timeless classic, others have seen inventions and new iterations. However, the most on-trend ceiling lights are modern and sculptural chandeliers. They reinvent the classic shabby chic glass drop pendant into something that looks like an architectural masterpiece. “Trends reflect the cultural and political environment of the society. Design and art respond to these changes, as well as challenges, and it brings new perspectives or ideas as to how to look at the problem. The same applies to our jobs as designers of chandeliers,” said Jiri Krisica - Head of Design, Sans Souci. Adding further Sachin and Neha Gupta Founders and Interior Designer Duo at Beyond Jiri Krisica Head of Design, Sans Souci Sculptural statements Lighting doesn’t have to only be functional, it can be beautiful as well. Whether you go for a romantic chandelier or a modern pendant, a striking light fixture can complete a living room. This season, it’s time to move on from the traditional curves and century-old details to architectural masterpieces that are statement-making. Bringing together artistic designs and functionality, one of the key dining room lighting trends are sculptural pieces. Especially popular are glass-blown pieces in one-of-a-kind shapes and sizes. Such pieces are ideal to brighten up a seating area and create a focal point. Install a dimmer switch to be able to switch up the atmosphere and set the mood. Luxurious layered lighting Light a room up with a single standard bulb and it will look stark, with a lack of atmosphere. But soft layered lighting adds an ambient touch to your space and is becoming increasingly popular. One of the key highlights of the trend is the ease with which is allows you to create different zones in your space. Layering lighting can add warmth and cosiness to a space. So howcan you champion the trend? This kind of lighting should be layered by illuminated pockets on the walls, striking linear lines in your floor lamps to zone areas for their function and style, and oversized pendants hanging from the ceiling for added drama. A play of different sizes, structures and lights helps to add depth. Agreeing with the trend Neha Troy 5 Light Chandelier, Renovation Factory 6|L U X E B O O K|D E C E MB E R 2 0 2 2 D E C E MB E R 2 0 2 2 |L U X E B O O K| 7 LIGHT UP

and Sachin share a useful tip, “A chandelier is not the only source of light in a room. It needs accompanying artists to help it to stage the drama. The focus is on layered lighting to create magical environments, for which one needs to invest in multiple light sources that orchestrate a beautiful ambience. With a layered scheme, the lighting and mood can be changed according to the occasion. So, more and more people are complementing the chandelier with recessed LED lighting or track lights to evenly illuminate the room.” Sustainable lighting Nature remains in focus this season, and sustainability is the talk of the hour. Neha and Sachin are of the opinion that “materials like the age-old brass and sparkling crystals to metals in sophisticated finishes, steel and humble bamboo and rattan are being fashioned into refined designs.” Hence, it’s no surprise to see the uptake in the use of woven materials like rattan and bamboo in particular. Lighting is also shifting its focus to incorporate chandeliers made from recycled steel and lights made using rattan and bamboo, cane and linen, and plenty of other materials that are considered environmentally friendly. Fixtures made from sustainable materials like bamboo or recycled glass are eco-friendly choices and help reduce your carbon footprint as well. Pendant accents A staple lighting style for the kitchen and living room, pendant lightinghas takenover theworld. While pendants are an ever-popular choice, quirkier lighting fixtures are taking centre stage. From dramatic chandeliers to modern linear works of art, the new pendant lights allow a flow of creativity. Exaggerated and artistic pendants are often added to a room to create a focal centrepiece, but this season, designers are matching the pendants to the colour of the walls for a monochromatic look. Smart lighting Technology has taken over almost every sphere of our life, and hence it’s no surprise that it’s seeped into the world of lighting. Smart lighting is a key trend for 2023 and champions fixtures that can be controlled via a smartphone. These allow complete control over the atmosphere and energy consumption of your home. Further, you can create ambient lighting suited to your activity and even schedule when you’d like the lights turned off or on. The trend of digitisation and smart solutions is progressing at a fast pace feels Jiri, especially with AI and related technological solutions, which escalated further with the Covid-19 crisis. All our lights are compatible with smart technologies, and we also work with dynamic lighting, which can react to music, movement or temperature. We have installations where you can change colours and effects as well as where light reacts to a certain sound. This can be a clink of two glasses or the sound of piano. We have an installation at a wine bar in a spa resort, which reacts once the glasses touch.” Wall sconce lighting Sconces are a popular trend for those who are short on space. Replacing floor lamps, these wall sconces are adjustable and overarching styles that can be tucked out of the way when not needed. Whether you’re looking for attractive fixtures to complement your decor or need something stylish to illuminate a specific side table or your favourite reading chair, there is a decorative wall sconce for all. From ultra-modern adjustable bedroom lamps to rustic farmhouse lights for the kitchen, there’s something here to complement any interior. However, these elements are often employed to light up the corners and the rest of the areas to complete the look feel the duo at Beyond Designs. Backlit Mirrors Backlit mirrors add the beauty of layered lighting into your bathroom seamlessly. Not only does this give the room more visual interest, but it also allows you to customize the atmosphere to suit your needs. From customising it to brighter light for applying makeup to creating a subtle setting while soaking in the tub, you can experiment to suit your desires. Natural Light However, the biggest trend is undoubtedly natural light, because the beauty of this cannot be taken away by anyone. Large bay windows will always be a key trend for modern homes since nature’s light source plays an important role in the aesthetics of a room as well as our health and wellness. Leave windows without curtains or choose curtains that are lightweight and slightly transparent, for the most soothing effect. Earlier, it was the consensus that picking a good restaurant was solely dependent on the cuisine, because good food equals a good restaurant. And while that may be true, food is no longer the only aspect that defines a dining experience. The interiors and design of a restaurant have become an important factor for many, given that it can alleviate one’s dining experience. Walking through the doors, the first thing one notices when they enter a restaurant is the ambience – the lighting, décor, seating design, prominent statement structures and elements. All of these have been said to affect a customer’s mood when entering the space and can often be one of the defining factors on their return to the same restaurant. Innovative design with interiors that become a talking point is among the top priorities for restaurant owners. It is also a major aspect that can affect the success rate of the restaurant. When it comes to creativity in design, restaurateurs tend to pick a theme, be it glamorous or retro-chic. Some look to specific destinations for inspiration, which is among the top trends currently. Other prominent elements like a distinguished colour palette and complementary décor further establish the theme and design of the space. Akina, Mumbai A new Japanese fine dining space in Mumbai, Akina’s glam maximalist interiors are a standing highlight of the restaurant, aside from its delectable menu. While the restaurant manages to bring in the best of Japanese tradition and heritage to the food, it does the same with the design sensibilities that influences the space. In Japan, design is characterised by organic forms that represent nature with tons of geometric shapes. Bringing in parts of these traditional elements, Akina showcases an organic yet contemporary space with modern design inspired by traditional Japanese roots. Bold red hues outline the entirety of the 5,000 sq. ft. restaurant; Japanese spring flowers are the main motifs highlighted throughout the restaurant. The bar in Akina takes on a regal red, black and gold theme with a minimalist curved back-lit onyx, inspired by the traditional Shoji screens illuminating traditional homes in Japan. Dubai-based F&B Entrepreneur Ryan SNR who partnered with Hitesh Keswani for the restaurant, wanted to support the Indian local artisan community FINE DINE MEETS LUXE INTERIORS Restaurants are looking to provide a wholesome experience with impressive interiors BY SCHENELLE DSOUZA as well while building the place. And so, the restaurant uses a substantial portion of the dinnerware and crockery made by local artisans in India as well as Japan. A fun new addition to the already glamorous restaurant is the luxurious underground speakeasy lounge called Prive by Akina. Envisioned to be an oasis of warmth, mystery and magic, Prive is enveloped in a lush jewel blue velvet and suede with a striking Koi Pond water ripple ceiling. With its regal tones and lush décor, Prive is the ideal spot for a sit-down session post a memorable meal at Akina. Bar Palladio, Jaipur Jaipur’s Bar Palladio, with its striking blue interiors, is the perfect contrast to the beautiful pink city of India. The restaurant is an ode to Italian style and cuisine that takes inspiration from the iconic Caffé Florian and Harry’s Bar in Venice, while maintaining key motifs from Mughal design. The name comes from the Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. Akina, Mumbai Akina, Mumbai 12|L U X E B O O K|D E C E MB E R 2 0 2 2 D E C E MB E R 2 0 2 2 |L U X E B O O K| 13 THE DINING EXPERIENCE

The restaurant itself is located within the historic Narain Niwas Palace Hotel. Dutch designer Marie-Anne Oudejans conceptualized Bar Palladio as a maharaja’s palace from the 1960s. She combines both Italian and Indian design sensibilities with a royal shade of blue hue splashed against calming white tones for a bold but elegant look. Wandering peacocks, mature mango trees, and a garden of tented canopies dictate an orientalist fantasy, inspired by olden-day Mughal architecture. The restaurant has multiple sections including two private dining areas, a sheltered patio, and an open area with several tented canopies and small campfires. The bar area is one of the most impressive sections, characterised by the region’s tradition of wall paintings hand-painted by artist Vikas Soni. Additionally, a collection of brilliant neon colours breathes new life into the art of block printing that adorns the linen at this gentleman’s bar. Ditas, Mumbai A popular hot spot in Delhi, Ditas graced Mumbai with a retro-glam space that was set to leave a lasting effect. From the moment you step in, you’re transported to a different realm, one that is defined by glamour with a touch of minimalism. Minimal European décor with retro-chic art nouveau-inspired interiors defines the entirety of Ditas. The entire space is divided into two areas – a longrunning patio and a central dining space. The patio is accentuated with wicker and cane chairs, along with patterned tiles that give it a café-like vibe, while the bar-dining area has the ideal, picture-perfect set-up for a fine dining experience. The state-of-the-art bar is paired with an onyx stone counter decorated with gold embellishments adding to the glitzy ambience. Each wall in the restaurant has a defining aspect. The bar area has a high mirrored arch display for the bar collection, while the adjacent walls on the left and right display a garden art wall and a collection of abstract paintings respectively. Lighting plays a very important role, and so Ditas incorporates a selection of disco balls and boho chandeliers for an eclectic theme to match the furniture. With Moroccan blue tiles, as a call back to their Delhi interiors, and electric mid-century furniture, the Soho living room style seating places you in a luxurious highend lounge. Plum by Bent Chair, Delhi If you’re a fan of all things quirky, then you’ll love Plum by Bent Chair’s eclectic, all out décor. Tons of colour, bold elements, vibrant décor and an elaborate mix of prints and patterns are some of the ways to define this lively space. In addition to its unique design scheme, Plum by Bent Chair also poses a one-of-a-kind experience with a retail restaurant format, allowing customers to enjoy a live interaction with Bent Chair’s vast product range, while enjoying a delicious meal. Interestingly, Bent Chair’s flagship store has been incorporated right above this outlet as well. One of the most instagrammable restaurants in India, Plum by Bent Chair gets its name from the striking plum hue that covers the walls and columns of the restaurant. This vibrant colour is then accentuated with Victorian artworks, mirrors and pretty planters. Interestingly, every piece of décor and furniture displayed in the restaurant comes from Bent Chair’s extensive range and is available on the catalogue for sale. Elements like mirrors, crystals, gold-plated stainless steel, florals and fabric lights work together to create a replica of the Garden of Eden with chrome-plated grapes and tiny hummingbirds dancing in between. Like most restaurants, the bar is the highlight of the restaurant. The back of the bar combines innovative design with light-responsive wallpaper; panels on the bar front further adds artistic details with illustrations inspired by the works of Japanese artist Miroco Machiko. Someplace Else, Mumbai A celebrated pub and performance space in Kolkata, Someplace Else in Mumbai is a multiverse of art, entertainment and cuisine, blending the magic of Kolkata with a reimagined vibrance that defines the city of Mumbai. Designed by London-based design firm Project Orange, the key difference in the Mumbai outlet is its use of colour in multitude – bold pattern, bright colours and standout décor that accentuates the Technicolor aesthetic of the space. Stepping into the restaurant, the edgy bar is the first thing you notice. The double-sided bar is adorned with a padded orange front and accented with a number of hand-blown glass spheres in jewel tones of amethyst, ruby and sapphire, hanging about the bar top. When it comes to décor, Someplace Else has incorporated the best of it. Mushroom-shaped lighting structures hanging from the ceiling, vibrant wall furnishings, plush seating and best of all, the technicoloured timber surrounding the stage area. The seating here is designed keeping in mind the live performances and acoustics. This means high bar stools, sofas and booths which create different settings for different moods. Along the glass wall behind the bar is a collection of vertical fins that create an optical illusion while providing a level of privacy for the diners. apart. A pan-Asian restaurant located in Koregaon Park, Tsuki encapsulates the beauty of a Zen Garden, inspired by the tropical sights of Bali, with a rainforest like setting. Although a pan-Asian restaurant, the owners wanted to stray away from typical Asian décor elements like black and red hues, and contemporary, western décor. And so, they opted for a natural ambience characterised by ample of plants and greenery. The name Tsuki means moonlit, and that was designer Keith Menon’s cue to give the place an open roof design with a skylight in the central section of the restaurant. Here, they fixed a collection of solar panels that power the entire restaurant. Since the restaurant was surrounded by plenty of natural greenery before designing, Menon decided to go for a garden theme, filling the interiors with amply of planters and foliage. This part was done in collaboration with Ugaoo, who executed the horticulture seen throughout the restaurant. Keeping in line with the natural theme of the space, Menon opted for muted and minimal tones with rustic décor, and elements like wood, wicker and stone, to match the aesthetic. He wanted to ensure that all base colours of fabrics were neutral, so as to avoid any harsh elements. Sustainability is another important factor in the design philosophy of the restaurant. Not only is it fully solar powered but has also made extensive use of reclaimed teak and sheesham wood to create the furniture. Popular Indian interior designers and entrepreneurs give us a tour inside their lavish abodes BY SCHENELLE DSOUZA One’s home is always an interpretation of their own personality. And when it comes to people within the design industry, home is more often than not an interpretation of their design philosophies. Given their skillset and knowledge of the industry, it’s fair to assume that interior designers and designer entrepreneurs have an added edge when it comes to designing their homes. But a lesser-known fact is that many a time, the designers’ home is far different from the ones they’re used to creating. More often than not, designers have a very different outlook when it comes to designing their own homes. LuxeBook took a look inside the homes of some of the well-known designers in the industry. Dhara and Falgun Shroff –Tessera India Noted among the top designers in India, Dhara and Falgun Shroff of Tessera India are credited with bringing innovative Italian solutions to Indian homes. Their unique design perspective and innovative techniques extend beyond their work and to their own home. Built during the pandemic, the architect duo completed the labour and design in just about 10 months, resulting in a stunning four-bedroom duplex in Andheri West, Mumbai. The home is spread across 3,800 sq. ft. and displays a contemporary, minimalist vibe, characterised by sophisticated, subdued tones of golds and greys with wooden finishes. Symmetry in design is a concept portrayed beautifully throughout the home; modern clean lines, minimal décor, and pale hues complement each other while simultaneously standing out on their own. Artworks are displayed in plenty —from eye-catching black-and-white portraits to colourful paintings — the home displays a selection of statement, noteworthy pieces throughout the space. Keeping in line with the concept of symmetry, the couple divided the spaces to avoid creative conflict. as the family room, were planned entirely by Falgun, while Dhara designed the master bedroom and the kids’ rooms opting for a more practical approach. Every piece of décor, furniture and upholstery was handpicked by the couple. These include the intricately carved contemporary furniture and natural stone flooring, among other elements. While all the rooms are designed in similar neutral tones, each room evidently has a different theme in terms of colour. The formal living room, for example, displays mostly grey tones with a handful of beige elements. A sunken sofa from Minotti paired with trendy armchairs from Poltrona Frau takes the centre stage alongside a long centre table by Giorgetti. While the furniture is curated, it’s hard to miss the unconventional Rakumba floor lamp that adds elegance to the space. The informal living roomhas amore casual, contemporary aesthetic, with pastel shades of pink, blue and white dominating the space. The room gets a pop of colour from the dull gold decorative lamps from Roll & Hill, while the fabric panels by Sicis draws out the artistic creativity of the space. The entertainment room has to be one of the most interesting spaces with its special blue and black Sicis marble flooring. Complementing the eccentric floor, a royal blue B&B Italia couch is a fashionably regal spot to lay in. The jewel tone of the couch combines with the unique shaped contemporary centre table from Castelli, and a Bosa artefact lends a rather plush, upbeat vibe to the room. The home displays a generous selection of artworks, and while there are a handful of pieces here and there, the bedrooms are where these artworks really shine out. In the master bedroom, a colourful psychedelic piece by KK Raghava while the child’s rooms get an artistic wallpaper from Wall & Decò. In the master bedroom, the painting along with a gradient toned chair from a Moroso echo colour into the rather muted room. A blackand-white carpet, grey sofa and dark geometric table all from by Baxter blend into the sober aesthetic of the room. The son’s bedroom gets a Barcelona Design side table and a striking blue shelf case providing a child-like comical aura to the room. In its entirety, the home is a beautiful example of a contemporary home that is both luxurious and minimalistic at the same time. The paintings and other statement pieces blend with the décor lending a muchneeded splash of colour and creativity; colourful lights,, pale pinks, lush golds and blues, paired with muted browns and greens all flow into each other. Pavan Chatlani –Managing Partner,Dash Square Bengaluru based Dash Square’s Pavan Chatlani has always represented a refined elegance and style when it comes to furniture designs. His home is a reinterpretation of the same style displaying modern elements within a predominantly neutral space, with opulent details like marble and wood making a statement. Every corner of the house has a bright and airy layout which keeps the neutral ambience looking warm and welcoming rather than pale and elusive. The light filled foyer is an example of the open layout at home. The colour black has been used to create a stark contrast to the white surroundings. This includes two cosy leather couches and a wooden-patterned screen that partially separates the living room and the foyer among other details. A bright yellow accent chair adds a fun pop of colour to the black and white ambience while glossy wood finishes along the TV cabinets and wooden ceiling details add a certain richness and depth to the space. An exciting feature in the home is the chic patio bar that extends from one section of the living room. Adding to the wood detailing, the stylish wooden deck, wooden bar top and plush chairs give the patio an informal yet cosy vibe. The patio bar opens into the dining room on the right where a wall panel made of linear wooden rafts creates an elegant backdrop to the stone topped dining table. Intimate, upholstered chairs, a decorative ceiling, and charming accent light, really binds the dining space together. The master bedroom gets a light edge with a 3D wooden wall panelling, a dynamic backdrop for a comfortable bed space. Wooden elements once again make a standout appearance in the form of wooden flooring which along with the panelling adds a naturally warm ambience. Chic accessories, artworks and pendant lights break the monotony adding a statement style to all the bedrooms. While the owners put their own ideas together when designing the space, the end result was a simple, yet This and facing page: Dash Square 22|L U X E B O O K|D E C E MB E R 2 0 2 2 D E C E MB E R 2 0 2 2 |L U X E B O O K| 23

remarkable aesthetic that was an expression of their refined sensibilities. These are evident through the various elements of design that delivered a beautiful and harmonious space minimising the overall effort. Saba Kapoor – Designer, Nivasa Kapoor’s house in the Aravali range is a project that is close to their hearts. It has been designed in keeping with their focus on sustainability, and hence, both the material and the colour palette appears raw yet refined. Packed with custom touches and craftsmanship, our house boasts four defined spaces: double height foyer, double height terrace, living room and bar. A double height terrace is the heart of the house with every room opening to it. The double height foyer is one of the defined spaces in the house. The decor is forever in fluxwhether it is to reflect the change in season or design attitude. For the dining and lounge, they used natural wood and earthy materials throughout the house— from floor to furniture, and fleshed them out with intricate details. Everything that shares a footprint in the house is thoughtfully worked into, hand-cut or hand-sewn and meticulously put together. The Master bedroom showcases timeless techniques with a new twist. Refreshing hues of greens bring in pops of colour to the pristine white rooms. Floral upholstery and elaborate details bring back the yesteryear charm, the outcome being a space that spells opulence and comfort in the same breath. While the overall theme of the house is contemporary, they aestheticized it through the contrasting interplay of minimalism and maximalism. Pleasing medley of dramatic accents, vintage elements and artisanal pieces make it all come together organically. This aesthetic dichotomy is achieved by using a minimal neutral palette and dramatic styling of oversized mirrors, sculptures, and art. Sumptuous finishes like that of muted and antiqued brass add accent to doors, sculptures, furniture, and chandeliers. The living room is adorned by a bar. Packed with custom touches, the house boasts four defined spaces and the bar is one of them. This conversation starter is carefully crafted to perfection and it reflects true design aesthetics. A solid hardwood bar with intricate carvings does just that. Abeautiful corner in the living room includes vintage switches that lend it an air of old-world elegance. The diverse inventory of antiques, art, and artefacts that the duo have collected over the years from their travels across India and abroad shows up everywhere in the house. Thefamilybelievesthatspacescanbemultifunctional. The lounge doubles up as a dining room as it boasts of a dining table that converts into a coffee table, thanks to an in-built mechanism. In the living area, wooden bay windows, a brass double door and vignettes from various travels lend a charm of their own. Natural woody and earthy materials have been used throughout, from flooring and furniture to the intricate details seen in the decor, yet each section sees a variation in flooring and placement of furniture. This home is a blend of classic and contemporary-filled with antiques and character filled elements such as switchboards, artefacts. The living room has a beautiful bay window overlooking the Golf course and Aravali range. While each of these areas has its own soul and spirit —we have used sliding doors to demarcate as well as to unify the spaces. One look at the home and you know it belongs to designers, it goes without saying that the decor is forever in flux—whether it is to reflect the change in season or design attitude. The wooden bay window area, the vertical volume of the terrace incorporates wooden panelling seducing the eye to roam all the way to the top. The dining and lounge. During winters, this area morphs into a dining room. Wood and brass accents create a contemporary yet earthy vibe in the bar/family lounge. The master bathroom. This house has been designed in keeping with Nivasa’s design ethos of sustainability, thus the colour palette appears raw yet refined. Indigenous materials and local craftsmanship have been celebrated throughout the house. The double height foyer is adorned by a beautiful staircase. An intricate cast railing enhances the staircase—the captivating reflection of which is captured in an imposing 20-foot mirror. The lobby, double height invites pools of natural light. It also has a fireplace which is enlivened with fresh blooms and birdcage mirrors. Nothing screams luxury more than marble. Known as one of the most opulent building materials, marble can really stand out in any space thanks to its gorgeous veining and colour variations. For thousands of years, marble has been the choice of material for monuments, temples, and construction projects. The stone has stood as a symbol for heritage, luxury, and exquisite taste for a very long time. It is also fascinating to note that some of the most famous structures in the world were built by the Ancient Greeks using exquisite white marble. The Parthenon in Athens, the Colosseum in Rome, the Taj Mahal in India, and even the White House are excellent examples. Even today, the use of marble is highly appreciated and valued. With the advancement of technology and quarries, we have access to a variety of marble cuts and finishes. From marble walls and floors to marble wall coverings, kitchen splashbacks, and accent wall panels, it adds a chic accent to any space. The glistening white stone has long been associated with ancient structures and architectural marvels, but it is now a fashionable addition to every modern home. BY JADE CRASTO A guide to using marble From Ancient Rome to the modern home With careful use and appropriate design, marble is a great investment that may increase the value of your home at a reasonable cost. To grasp a better understanding of how marble can be used in homes, LuxeBook spoke to Rupesh Shinde, Founder and Chief Curator, The Quarry. The Quarry has the best Italian marble that’s handpicked from 31 countries and 179 quarries across the world. Each slab is cut and polished by generations of Italian craftsmen to the world standard of 20mm thickness. Their expertise is in crafting bespoke marble solutions for your interiors, based on your specific needs. What are the best ways to incorporate marble in interior design? Marble and natural stone offer architects, designers and homeowners many exciting solutions. Take, for example, exteriors, marble shields the outer surfaces of a building and comes in a breath-taking range of colours and finishes that add luxury, style and durability. While using natural stone in interiors can transform the design and aesthetics of the space, luxury marble, granite and rare onyx brings individuality and sophistication to a home compared to factory-made tiles and sheets. In fact, natural stones even protect the home from external weather conditions and noise pollution. I strongly recommend you choose marble that is 100% natural, crafted by nature over centuries. And Mother Nature is a great artist! We curate marble from quarries that mine responsibly, giving the home it adorns a sense of exclusivity and refinement. Are there any specific types of marble that can only be used in the home? It depends on the area of application. Every stone has its own properties and technical specifications in terms of porosity, abrasion resistance, density, and how a natural stone is formed over the years. For example — is it a metamorphic rock or igneous rock? It also depends on what parts of a particular quarry the marble has the block been procured from. We propose a SIA for all our clients –Site and Installation audit — and recommend the appropriate type of marble. Money and availability are considered only after functionality, aesthetics and longevity of use. Over the years, we have used technology to better capture and understand data on usage, preferences and colours that India loves and Parthenon in Athens Taj Mahal MARBLE GUIDE 26|L U X E B O O K|D E C E MB E R 2 0 2 2 D E C E MB E R 2 0 2 2 |L U X E B O O K| 27

have been able to streamline our curation process to deliver better solutions. What is the best type of cut or finish when using marble in the home space? For years, only a polished finish has been conventionally offered and used. But today’s modern homes deserve more. The Quarry offers finishes like mirror, honed, lether, waterjet and more. However, avoid using lether finish on kitchen countertops as it can collect masala stains or spills that are common in Indian cooking. What are some pros and cons of having marble flooring? The pros of having marble flooring are that it is very low maintenance, and if maintained well it can stay for decades. If you get the right curation, marble exudes luxury and style. There are a lot of cheaper inferior quality marble in the market, posing as the original. But sadly, they are imitations that do not last. It is what you can commonly see in almost every 5-7 star hotel lobby and even the wealthiest homes. Can the climate have severe effects on quality? India compromises more than the weather affects the marble. Therefore, we insist on every slab being cut and polished in Italy using alpine water by generations of Italian craftsmen. Our global inspectors insist on personally handpicking every slab and ensuring it is cut to the exacting global standards of 20mm thickness. Curators insist on auditing the site and recommending only the right marble for the right application. Ensuring minimum seepage in bathrooms or colour loss due to the wrong marble being placed in direct sunlight.Marble is beautiful and celebrated world over for centuries and will continue to be celebrated by the discerning. Is marble flooring better than terrazzo or carpet? Absolutely! Marble is definitely better. It is more durable. Believe it or not, is very low on maintenance and more importantly it is 100% natural. Carpets are high maintenance, whereas terrazzo is an artificial alternative. It’s almost like comparing fine wine with a fizzy cola. How important are the veins found in slabs? Veins in natural stone are what make each piece of marble one-of-a-kind. These veins are a natural occurrence created by crystallized minerals depositing as water runs through the stone and evaporates. Because different types of minerals are left in the stone during this process, veining can come in all different colours and patterns. At The Quarry we even have a selection of natural stone with Jurassic and semi-precious deposits, they are just wow! When veins are book-matched, they create the most exclusive mirror-like patterns. Both rare and cannot be replicated. The best marble to use as flooring in a home space? That’s like asking a parent to pick their favourite child. It’s tough for me not to fall in love with all our curations. India and most parts of the world often choose Italian marble for its flooring because of its shine and luxurious feel. As a curator, I know that even in Italy stones like Statuario and Carrara come from various parts, but the most durable marble is Laas from North Italy. It is very difficult to pick one but The Quarry curated Laas Authentico is everyone’s favourite. For flooring, I would recommend The Quarry curated Laas Authentico from Italy and Blue De Savoy from Brazil. At The Quarry, we are always on a journey of discovery, travelling to new quarries across the world and delivering them to the doorstep of our clients. The most sought-after type of marble? India has trends which evolve over time. Initially there was a time when a lot of people preferred the colour beige, later greys were the colour of choice, and today the skew is towards whites. Since consumers or even professionals are not aware of the stone names, unless briefed correctly, they usually pick their marble through colours. So currently, I would say the most sought-after type of marble is white! While marble adds opulence to every home, Shinde has shared some valuable insights to keep in mind when you step out to scout for that exquisite piece. It’s never too early to start getting the furniture together for your kids’ room. Designing a nursery may seem like a mammoth task, but it is also one area where you can let your creativity flow. However, keep in mind that you will be spending many late nights in this room so make it comfy! The nursery is your baby’s first home, and the space should boast an inviting, calming, and fun atmosphere full of wonder. But at the same time, it needs to focus on functionality and comfort for everyone who will be using it.While the idea of decorating a nursery has seen a drastic change over the years to include theme, interactive furniture, bunk beds with slides and more; some elements like cribs and cabinets are a mainstay. The evolution of designing a nursery There was a time when expecting parents would create a nurserywith a crib, changing table and rocker, but things have changed. Today you can incorporate safari animals, world maps on walls, butterflies or a favourite Disney character in your child’s nursery — but these days, instead of going wall-to-wall with themed decor, interior designers and parents are looking for practical, stylish options that will evolve as the children get older. “The essentials for a kid’s room would be the judicious usage of colours, innovative lighting, Bold patterns and most importantly combining functional elements to create a warm and secure space for the little ones,”Arpita Subbaiah, Head of Design at Carafina Interior Designers told LuxeBook. Essential design elements The idea of a nursery as a safe and inspiring space for the little ones — an enchanting room that is practically designed to be a dreamy but functional space to care for a newborn. It is also the primary space for kids to think, self-reflect, recharge their batteries, and grow wings to their dreams. According to a study by Stoecklin (1999), the building, interiors of the room, and its arrangements and selection of pieces of equipment have a profound impact on children’s behaviour. Hence some design elements play a pivotal role in creating a nursery. Natural light is key in creating a positive environment. A range of colours in the play area improves social, cognitive, and emotional development of children. Storage space and furniture that creates active learning are some of the most essential design elements.” One of the major nursery trends that can be incorporated in the space is rich hues reflecting the calmness and subtlety required for the user. Soft curves on wall designs or furniture reflects softness and adds an element of elegance. Curated bright spaces with muted colour schemes and clean lines creates a happy space along with functionality,” shared architect Aparna Kaushik. While buying new furniture for a kid’s room is very easy and simple, attractive appearance is not the only requirement advantage of nursery furniture. It should be functional and safe. Therefore, when Innovations in nursery décor and furniture styles From interactive furniture to efficient use of space, furniture experts spill the beans on the top design trends for building a nursery BY ARUSHI SAKHUJA Architect Aparna Kaushik Arpita Subbaiah Ms. Romilla Tewari 32|L U X E B O O K|D E C E MB E R 2 0 2 2 D E C E MB E R 2 0 2 2 |L U X E B O O K| 33 NURSERY DÉCOR TRENDS

Rgb Controller Pc to transition a bedroom for a toddler, innovations in spaces are plentiful. Nature-inspired themes have come into the limelight due to the pandemic. Aparna says, “Nature-inspired themes with earthy prints and colourways add character and creates an interaction with the outdoors.” Think natural wood-finish with muted combinations, botanical motifs and wall coverings. Working on the interiors of the room can go a long way in the overall development of our child’s behavioural traits, academic performance, creative skills and cognitive abilities. It can even help mould the personality and individuality of the child. To make a room more interactive and learning-friendly adding features that are child friendly is key. Aparna suggests colour schemes, furniture items and interactive areas make rooms interesting and learning friendly. “Accent walls that highlight a particular sport/learning walls/ prints also make the room interesting.” Having said that, if you want to create a child’s room with longevity in mind, it’s best to leave the themed sets in the store and focus on practicality. Think of a crib that can be morphed into a bed, a dresser that can store items and a study table that can be used over years. But it doesn’t stop there, then comes the upholstery and fabric selections.” Tufted furniture, soft edges and corners, light furniture, and lots of soft furnishings are things one should use in a kid’s room,” said Aparna. Pointing out an interesting fact Romilla said that a nursery eventually needs to be turned into a kids/toddler’s room and for that reason, you shouldn’t clutter it too much initially. The room needs to grow with the baby as well. Popular themes Generally, nature and jungle-inspired trends, patterns like stripes, ginghams or teddy bear themes work the best, and are universal, according to Romilla Tewari. But colour palettes keep changing, she adds, saying that there is increasing use of wallpapers which helps to make the space more interesting. “Wallpapers become a central piece in a nursery, and you are using minimal furniture.” White furniture is a key trend, Tewari points out. As we head into the future, many people are digging into their own family’s treasure of hand-me-downs or mining decades of yesteryear nostalgia, to decorate their nurseries. A slow-rising trend in recent years mixes opulent antiques with complementary modern pieces and the trend is called “grand millennial.” And as the world shifts its focus to sustainability, so do nurseries. Nursery designs are seeing an uptick in furniture and trappings made of recycled materials, cane, energyefficient lighting solutions, and small-batch made linens, rugs, and toys. Further, cane furniture and woodwork are making a huge comeback. Whether it’s cane nursery furnishings or small nursery accessories, they’ll have a modern edgier look that will fit right into most nursery design styles with their rich texture and neutral colour.” Yet another interesting trend noted by Arpita Subbaiah, Head buying, you need to pay attention to the environmental friendliness of the material and the absence of protruding accessories, glass inserts and sharp corners. Interactive spaces Designing a nursery today has gone beyond just the realm of visual appeal alone. Today, nurseries are championing the marriage of playful design features free from extravagant detailing. Interior designers and furniture designers are using design in a pleasing, pragmatic and purposeful way to create stimulating and enriching learning spaces for children. Some include using custom-made furniture, wall graphics and other sensory and specialized components. Further, interior designers are also incorporating active spaces in rooms. Given the ban on sex determination in India, we do highly suggest opting for pastels and neutral colour tones while planning the room. From soft pastel colour schemes that harness a calming effect to the power of Design at Carafina Interior Designers, is the use of optic fibre lights. These are embedded in the ceiling and include starry light nights to various constellations... “they bring magic and imagination to every kid’s bedroom.” However, in India using a neutral colour palette is a popular trend. There is a rising group of parents who don’t prefer to assign different colours based on the child’s gender, in which case, a neutral palette is a crowd favourite. “A colour palette with shades of teal, yellow, lavender, warm cappuccino and so on would amp up the aesthetics of the space, and strategic placement of warm and light tones would do the initial job of setting context to the room,” says Subbaiah. But one design trend that seems to have stood the test of time are curves and arches. The trend is seeing a resurgence with a curved crib, rug, and/or oversized light fixture. Alongside a rounded crib and screen, polka dots in the bedding and circles in the mobile are curvy details to love.
