The very thought of a vacuum cleaner at work on your hair is enough to give you the spikes! But no, we are not asking you to try that out. Instead, we’re talking about an edgy hair styling device from Dyson, which primarily makes vacuum cleaners and air purifiers. While an elegant attire paired with the perfect handbag and shoe can give you the perfect look, messy hair can be a spoiler. Especially if you are pressed for time.

This is where hair styling tools come in handy – something I have been investing in for over a decade and a half. What started with Philips and graduated to Ikonic Professional, where I invested in multiple styling tools, the recent experience with Dyson has been outstanding. Primarily for two reasons - first, it is a multitasker – can dry, smoothen, add volume, curl and even create waves. And secondly, it styles without damaging the hair with excessive direct heat. Check out what we think of this gadget.

The Dyson Airwrap multi-styler comes accompanied with 6 different attachments, each specialising in creating a different hairstyle. The Coanda smoothing dryer attachment can be adjusted to dry and smoothen your hair and hide flyaways. The 30mm barrel can be used to fashion voluminous curls or waves while the 40mm barrel is for loose curls and waves.

The package also comes bundled with a soft smoothing brush and a firm smoothing brush, which as the name suggests, can be used on fine or frizzy hair for smoothening to get a straight fall. The final and most loved attachment is the volumising brush that adds volume to your hair and shapes the hairstyle. The neatly designed Airwrap body has three different control sliders, one each for adjusting the air temperature, airflow, and power.

The temperature slider has a three-point adjustable slider for normal, mid or high heat settings. The Airwrap constantly measures the temperature to keep it from getting too hot and burning your forehead or fingers. The airflow slider can be adjusted to get a normal, mid or a high airflow which is generated by the tiny but powerful digital V9 motor that makes the blades spin at 110,000rpm.

The power slider has an on/off setting with a cool shot mode that can be activated by holding the slider up for 5 seconds. The cool shot blows in a gust of normal air to lock in the styling. All this comes with a filter cleaning brush, comes neatly packed in an oval-shaped soft leather storage box.

For my office meetings, I like to keep my hair in a simple minimalistic style that can be made up in less than 15 minutes, rendering a tidy straightened look. The Coanda attachment is like a godsend for I can blow dry and smoothen out my hair in a jiffy. The Coanda attachment is a cylindrical snap-on attachment with an adjustable barrel with an air vent that can be turned clockwise and anti-clockwise for closing or opening it.

When opened, it lets out a focused airflow to blow dry your hair, and when closed, the two adjustable airflow outlets at the periphery are activated to smoothen the hair. Remember that V9 motor and the turbine blades spinning at 110,000rpm? Well, that’s what creates this ‘Coanda Effect’ that wraps hair to the barrel and the surface of the brush.

I have a bit of frizzy hair so my routine starts with drying the hair using the Coanda smoothing dryer attachment. It blows dry my mid-length hair in just under 5 minutes and takes about 10 minutes to smoothen them out on both sides. For me, the heat temperature setting on mid with a high airflow works well for blowing dry my hair. I then push up the heat to high to smoothen my hair for a perfect fall. A pro-tip here is to wipe down your wet hair with a towel first before you use this attachment.

Weekend dress-up to me means a curly touch-up to the hair ends. Unlike the conventional curling tongs where the heated metal comes in direct contact with the hair to shape them, the Airwrap needs no direct high heat to the hair.

Instead, it uses the hot air flow to the hair followed by the cool shot delivered the two barrels – the 30 mm one for voluminous curls and waves, and the 40 mm for loose curls and waves. The results of using either of these barrels are pretty fantastic. I'm able to get frizz-free, well-defined curls with less effort than ever before. All I had to do was to hold the section of my hair I wanted to be curled and bring them near the barrel. The high-speed airflow does the rest by wrapping the hair around the barrel, granting perfect curls.

The earlier edition of the Airwrap came with a unidirectional barrel that required changing for each side. The new Airwrap however has a rotating knob at its tip that can change the direction of the curl by simply twisting the knob, rather than changing the barrel.

The three hairbrushes that accompany the styler help create a more natural straight style. I used the firm smoothing brush, which is best for frizzy hair like mine, followed by the round brush that added some instant volume to my hair.

The Dyson Airwrap is a nifty hair styler that requires some practice and patience. But once one gets the hang of it, the styler is super convenient to use. Dyson is also offering a 10-day return policy on its website – good enough time to experience the styler, and if you still don’t like it, there is always an option to return. But once accustomed to it, there’s no parting you or your Airwrap.

Dyson says the new Air Wrap features an improved airflow system for faster styling with the intelligent heat control system as compared to the earlier model. To prevent heat damage to the hair, the temperature never exceeds 150 degrees.

The machine measures airflow temperature over 40 times a second, intelligently controlling the heating element to keep the temperature under 150 degrees C. This prevents extreme heat damage. But even then, using heat protection products is recommended.

If you have the Dyson Airwrap first generation and wish to upgrade, you need not spend money on the entire package. Dyson is letting existing Airwrap users upgrade to the full set of attachments for Rs 14,900.

This new version of the Airwrap is placed in a soft leather box. While it looks good, it does not feel as premium as the packaging of the first-generation Airwrap.

Also, I have been using Dyson Corrale Hair Straightener for a long, which comes with a built-in battery to be used on the go. Given the comfort of using it anywhere, without looking for a power point is convenient, and I hope Dyson engineers a similar technology for the Airwrap as well.

At Rs 45,900, the price may appear on the higher side, but the cost of ownership may be far lower than running to a saloon. And if you already own the previous Airwrap, buying the new attachments might be a better proposition than straight out buying the new one.
