The allure of a truck is a utilitarian vehicle that can double up as a luxury car for out of state camping trips. Leather-lined interiors, towing capacity, and unbridled horsepower may make a truck lean on the thriftier side. But if you desire a cheap truck that doesn’t offer compromises, check out the 20 cheapest trucks going into 2023 that we have compiled below.

Although it’s anticipated that the 2023 Jeep Gladiator will largely be a carryover model, we’ll keep hoping for the Gladiator 4xe or a new V8 engine. The truck still resembles its 2019 premiere in many ways. The Freedom special edition, which replaces the Altitude trim in the lineup and is a bit more expensive but comes with additional standard features, is the largest improvement. The Freedom version includes features like Oscar Mike badges on the tailgate, body-color fender flares, winch-capable steel front and rear bumpers, steel rock rails, LED headlights, and fog lights. The inside is finished with black accent stitching and fabric seats with leather trim.

A distinctive benefit of the 2023 Jeep Gladiator is the availability of a manual transmission and a diesel engine. The 3.0-liter V6 EcoDiesel engine produces 442 lb-ft of torque and 260 horsepower. The Gladiator’s 3.6-liter V6 engine produces 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. This mid-size truck’s 0 to 60 mph clocks in at 8.5 seconds. Even so, the Gladiator accelerates easily, and the transmission is smooth. It is a bit smoother than the Jeep Wrangler due to its longer wheelbase, but it could handle more precisely. Critics are quick to point out that the Gladiator has a rough ride, but the solid front axle helps the vehicle perform off-roading feats that are unmatched. The Gladiator can also tow up to 7,650 lbs.

The Silverado has permanent residence in the affordable trucks’ cadre. The 2019 Work Truck or simply the Chevrolet Silverado WT is the basis of the 2022 Silverado, although Chevrolet has added new features for the 2022 model. For an MSRP of $34,845, you get the base Silverado which has an underpowered four-cylinder engine delivering about 310 horsepower but an impressive 420 pound-feet of torque. But you can choose the torquey 3.0 liter inline six. The highest trims of the Silverado 1500 have either a 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 or a 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V-8. The maximum towing capacity of the Silverado 1500 is 13,300 pounds, while the bed options are limited to either a 5-foot-2-inch or a 6-foot-2inch bed. Surprisingly, the 2022 Silverado V-8 engine achieves 16 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. With a 2.0-inch lift and agile steering, you are sure to tackle the North Colorado mountains aboard the Silverado.

Not to be confused with the Ford F-150 Raptor, the brand’s most powerful truck the Ford F-150 is the cheapest full-size truck. The two-door truck has a 290-hp 3.3-liter V-6 engine and a 6.5-foot bed. However, if more horsepower is your thing, step up to the supercharged V-6 or the top-of-the-line 400-hp 5.0-liter V-8 engine. Sadly, the base XL version lacks the finer materials and upscale cabin. For a few thousand bucks more than the MSRP of $31,335, you can step up to the Limited trim and get Ford’s Sync 4 infotainment system via a 12.0-inch vertically oriented touchscreen.

What’s unique about the Ford F-150 is that there’s a hybrid powertrain available for the 2022 model. Since the F-150 is all about power, you can expect a maximum towing capacity of 8,200 pounds on the base model and 13,000 pounds on the venerable V-8 model. For those seeking additional power, the Ford F-150 has an optional onboard 7.2 kW generator for attaching electrical and mechanical equipment. The Ford F-150’s useful amenities, like increased bed length, are reserved for the top trims that start past the $50,000 mark. For the base model, you still get plenty of cabin space and adept handling.

A worthy competitor to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is the Nissan Frontier. The 2022 model is a revamped car with bold bodywork featuring a square-jawed design and a standard naturally aspirated V-6 delivering 310 horsepower like the Silverado’s base engine. Despite having a standard engine across all trims, you can choose the four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. All the changes that come with the new age Nissan Frontier do not cause a hike in price, as Car Connection explains.

The MSRP is about $29,985. You get 6720 pounds towing capacity and 1610 payload capacity for that price. The fuel efficiency is somewhat at par with the Chevy clocking in at 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. The bed capacity also compares to the Silverado with the option of 5 or 6 feet. The Nissan Frontier has some premium features, including an 8.0-inch touchscreen or a 9.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Of all the Rams, the 1500 Classic is the most affordable of the lot. With an MSRP of $29,650 for the base model, you get a truck motivated by a 305-horsepower 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 mated to an eight-speed automatic, which can tow up to 4,610 pounds. The bed capacity is an impressive 6-foot 4-inch. Many truck enthusiasts recommend the SLT trim rather than the base Tradesman trim of the Ram 1500 Classic to upgrade to the robust V5.7-liter HEMI V-8. The higher trim, with an asking price in the $40,000 region, has rear coil suspension that ensures the truck rides like a comfortable car. However, according to Car Buzz, this trim is available as a fleet-only truck. The value proposition of the Ram 1500 Classic other than affordability is the intuitive Uconnect 3 system that mates to a standard 5.0-inch touchscreen.

No budget-friendly car list is complete without a Toyota. The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is a popular choice among truck lovers owing to its durability, practicality, and bottom-rung price tag. The MSRP is about $28,485. However, to get the popular TRD Off Road trim, you must part with an additional $9k. The Taco has multiple trim options that may be hard to filter through. The engine choices, which are a four-cylinder engine and a 278 hp V-6, can help you narrow it down to one Taco truck. Other features, such as the towing capability, depend largely on the engine choice. The brawny V-6-powered Tacomas can tow up to 6,800 pounds. As you probably guessed, a five-foot or six-foot bed is available, depending on the engine and trim choice.

While some Ford drivers will have to settle without an infotainment system in their cars, credit to Toyota. They fitted the base Tacoma with a 7.0-inch display and an 8.0-inch display on the higher trims. The best features, such as electronic locking differential and gnarly tires, are limited to the premium trims. With that, the Toyota Tacoma is a truck you want on the off-road terrain where it shines.

It is hard to find a mid-size truck with full-size truck capabilities. But the 2022 GMC Canyon offers plenty of available features and excellent towing capability despite the MSRP of 28,595 for its base model. The base trim has a turbodiesel inline-four engine, while higher trims have a 308-hp V-6 under the hood. The Canyon is ideal for towing and rough terrain. Its payload capacity starts at 1599 pounds and tops out at 1605 pounds, while the maximum towing capacity is an impressive 7700 pounds. The automatic locking rear differential improves traction in hilly areas. For those that desire luxury in the GMC Canyon, the top trim offers ventilated and heated leather-appointed seating and a Bose 7-speaker sound system to keep the adventure going.

The crossover truck bug bit Hyundai compelling them to develop the Hyundai Santa Cruz. The 2023 Santa Cruz features an SUV unibody construction that limits the bed capacity to 4 feet. The truck won’t earn you any points for driving a manly truck, but it exudes a comfortable ride, much like a car. This is partly due to the front-wheel drive that generates power from a 191-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. You can upgrade to the 251-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission for more torque. Factor in the agile handling and compact size into the 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz. By this, you enjoy an SUV driving experience like The Hyundai Tucson that the Hyundai Santa Cruz is based on and not the Santa Fe as most people presume .

For its trucking abilities, you get a maximum 5,000-pound towing capacity while the base Santa Cruz tows up to 3500 pounds max. The Hyundai Santa Cruz has a comparable towing capacity with the Ford Maverick but outshines the Maverick with its upscale cabin. The cabin ranks among the best in the mid-size truck segment. The digital cluster complements the standard 8.0-inch touchscreen, which you can upgrade to 10.3 on higher trims. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless charging are all standard on the Santa Cruz. You can invest in the eight-speaker Bose sound system for the music-loving owner to keep you and your passengers entertained. Part of its standard driver assistance features includes lane departure warning, automated emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, and rear traffic cross alert.

The mid-size Ford Ranger is a pickup truck that should fit your needs without breaking the bank in 2022. The Ranger’s turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder and 10-speed automatic transmission suffice in place of the V-6 and V-8 engines found in its larger brother; rear-wheel drive is standard, although all-wheel drive is an option across the lineup. There are four trim levels for the Ford Ranger. For 2022, the Ranger lineup will feature the playful Splash trim, offered as a package on XLT and Lariat versions. With its distinctive 18-inch matte-black wheels, orange grille trim, and gloss-black exterior elements, the Splash package exhibits its Nineties flair. Every few months, a new Splash Limited Edition truck will go on sale in a new color, with the Splash Snow Edition serving as the series debut.

The 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the 2022 Ford Ranger produces 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. It can tow up to 7500 pounds when outfitted with the optional tow package and does it with smooth and reliable engine delivery. The Ranger can carry up to 1860 pounds of cargo. There is a sufficient muscle to make the Ranger reasonably quick and generate silky output. A 10-speed automatic transmission is standard on all Ranger vehicles and offers seamless and rapid shifts. Models with rear-wheel drive have 8.4-inch ground clearance, while those with four-wheel drive have an 8.9-inch clearance. The Ranger is equipped with a Terrain Management System, which modifies factors like transmission gearing and engine reactivity to enhance the truck’s performance on various types of terrain.

Ford is the benchmark for affordable trucks, with three of them making this list. The Ford Maverick is another entrant with city driving dynamics, off-road capabilities, decent fuel economy, and bargain sticker price to match it. The Ford Maverick based on the Ford Bronco Sport is available in tree trims. The base trim has a hybrid powertrain comprising a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to issue 191 hp. Things get interesting on the 250-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic.

You may consider the Ford Maverick a city car owing to its crossover shape and compact size compared to other trucks on this list. For the four-and-a-half-foot bed hybrid Maverick, you get a 1500 pounds payload capacity and 2000 pounds of towing capacity. Step up to the turbocharged model to enjoy 4000 pounds of towing capacity. The suspension isn’t the best in class, but it still manages a comfortable ride in the city, where it also has 23 mpg. Automatic emergency braking, adjustable lumbar support, and an 8.0-inch infotainment system keep most families who own the Ford Maverick happy.
